Divan Literature Place Names Project (DLPN)

The results obtained through the labelling of place names, personal names and vocabulary we made on the Fuzûlî Divan, during a test phase of The Thousand Words Project in 2023, created under the umbrella of Digital Ottoman Projects, form the basis for the currently proposed project. DLPN Project, which aims to create digitised maps of divans by taking a sample of 100 divans from the 13th century to the 19th century and labelling the place names in the divans. In this context, the project has a unique value as it will be the first labelling and digitised mapping project produced in the field of Turkish language and literature. In the project, the labelling of place names in the sample of 100 divans will be undertaken using digital tools. The digitised maps are presented separately for each divan created online, and the gathering together of all divans in a single map will be shared on the open-access internet. The list of place names and information obtained by labelling on digital tools is presented to the scientific world with digital maps, and it is aimed to fill a research gap, as the first comprehensive place name study produced in the field of divan literature.

Fuzûlî’s Divan was used as a sample in the testing phase of the project. A three-step approach was followed during the testing phase. The second step of the testing phase formed the basis of this project. In this phase, the words in the Divan were tagged using special software based on person, place, and time. The outputs and methods experienced during the testing phase formed the infrastructure of the main part of the project. Below is a map resulting from the tagging of place names in Fuzûlî’s Divan produced during the Thousand Words Project Test Phase.
